The Old Forest

A Tolkien Tribute Sim in Second Life

The Old Forest

Welcome to The Old Forest

Far beyond the shores of Aman, where the Endless Sea (Alatairë, “Belegaër” in Sindarin) meets the sky, lies an archipelago cloaked in ancient mystery — The Old Forest. Here, in the early years of the First Age of Sun and Moon, a community has taken root among the ancient trees: Eldar who have seen the first starlight at the Cuiviénen, Sindar who remember Beleriand’s green shores, mortals seeking refuge, and others drawn by fate, fortune, or dark commands to these wooded isles.

Under the watchful guardianship of Yalawë Aldáron, the Túrëa (Master) of The Old Forest, an old friend of his, Randir Menelmacar, a veteran of the Beleriand wars, and Vanya Ranger Siëgoän Tanómiël, this settlement stands as both a sanctuary and a proving ground. Rangers patrol beneath towering boughs, craftspeople pursue their work in the Guild Hall, and the village hearths burn bright with fellowship and purpose against the shadows that still linger in the world.

Yet peace here is hard-won and fragile. Ancient enemies stir in hidden places, old grudges awaken from long slumber, and the forest itself remembers every wound inflicted upon it. In The Old Forest, courage is measured not in grand battles, but in the daily choice to build rather than destroy, to heal rather than hurt, and to stand together in hope rather than fall divided in despair.

Welcome to our corner of Arda. Whether you come as visitor, friend or frenemy, or as fellow traveler, the path to our gates lies open.

Our Vision

The Old Forest is more than a destination — it is a living story. Through the medium of Second Life, we recreate the rhythms and challenges of a frontier community in Arda’s earliest days, drawing from the rich tapestry of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien’s praised work “The Silmarillion”. Our tale unfolds in the early years of the First Age of Sun and Moon, some twelve thousand years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”, when the world was younger and the scars of ancient wars still fresh.

Visit us, worthy traveler and

  • wander forest paths that wind through glades both fair and shadowed, where the trees themselves seem watchful
  • seek out hidden places, clearings for contemplation, overlooks where the Endless Sea meets the horizon
  • join the community in councils, celebrations, and the sharing of tales both old and new
  • take up a role as a Ranger, Smith, Hunter, Healer, or Bard — the settlement needs willing hands
  • stand watch on the borders, for threats both seen and unseen still trouble these lands
  • learn the lore of the Elder Days through stories told by those who lived them
  • inhabit a rental in village or forest to which you can retreat.

Whether you come to explore, to contribute your skills, or simply to walk beneath ancient boughs in fellowship with kindred spirits, The Old Forest opens its paths to you.

A Labor of Love

The Old Forest stands through the dedication of those who tend it — volunteers who share a love for Professor Tolkien’s legendarium and believe such places should exist in the world (even if in our case it is only in virtual form). We claim no affiliation with the Tolkien Estate, nor do we seek profit from this work.

What we offer here is given freely: a sanctuary where the spirit of the Elder Days might be glimpsed, where stories are lived rather than merely read, and where the old trees remember those who walk beneath them. This is our gift to the Second Life community and to all who cherish the Professor’s vision of a world both beautiful and perilous, where small acts of courage matter as much as grand deeds.

Whether you are a longtime devotee of Professor Tolkien’s works or a curious traveler seeking beauty and respite from the modern world, The Old Forest welcomes you. Step through our gates and let the ancient woods share their secrets. We ask only that you come as the folk of these lands would — in attire befitting the age: elven grace, human practicality, or the simple garb of those who make their lives in wilder places. Leave the trappings of distant ages at the threshold, and walk our paths as those who belong here.
